Theme: I Spy 6 Plant Parts (outside!)

Hey there, Scientists!

On Monday, maybe you went for an I-Spy in your own kitchen and found some "roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds!"

...or maybe you did some plant part stretching!
...or did some singing about plant parts!

Today we'll take that I-Spy outside to the garden to see the 6 plant parts in action, working all together!

This mizuna lettuce plant has ALL 6 of the 6 Plant Parts at one time:

1. Roots:

2. Stems:
*Observe how the leaves are connected to the stems and how the stems are connected to the roots!)

3. Leaves:

*Mizuna leaves are the part that we eat on this plant. They're delicious!

Isn't it interesting that we eat some parts of some plants and we don't eat some parts of other plants?

We usually eat the leaves of lettuce, but we don't eat lettuce fruits! We eat the roots of carrot plants, but not the flowers!
We eat the fruits of an apple tree, but we don't eat the stem!

4. Flowers:

We can see the flowers AND the fruits in this picture. Remember that a fruit is anything that contains the seed!

Those long green pods are the fruits of the mizuna lettuce plant!

5. Fruits:

6. Seeds:

*I opened a fruit to show the seeds up close.
*The fruit is the "suitcase" for the seeds!

Try this activity:

1. In your science journal or on a piece of paper, write down each plant part (it's okay to make a list OR write a paragraph OR draw pictures!).

2. Then, write down your favorite for each part that you eat!

Eating all 6 plant parts helps our bodies and gives us the nutrients we need to stay healthy.

Can you think of a whole meal that uses all 6 plant parts at the same time? ...a meal that has roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, AND seeds?

Yum!
I love tacos!
